Jayapura, Papua (ANTARA News) - Armed civilians burned a government office building in Wondeng Gobak hamlet in the district of Mulia, Puncak Jaya, here on Tuesday.

The food resilience office building in the location where some armed civilians held out against a security forces` raid was seen in flames.

"That is the food resilience office that is burning," Puncak Jaya district head Lukas Enembe said when asked to confirm it by ANTARA News.

Exchanges of fire between police/TNI (military) forces and the armed civilian group continued to happen in Mulia city.

The gun battles raged on after the body of the Mulia police sector chief, Adjunct Commissioner Dominggus Awes, was flown to Sentani, Jayapura, on Tuesday afternoon. Streets in Mulia town were almost deserted.

Dominggos Awes was shot to death at the Mulia airport by men police believe were members of a separatist group.

Puncak Jaya district is located in a hilly part of Papua and subject to extreme weather conditions. The region which can be reached only by light aircraft observed its 15th anniversary on October 8, 2011.
