Jakarta (ANTARA News) - National Defense Forces (TNI) commander Admiral Agus Suhartono said the recent incidents in Abepura and Timika were being tackled by the territorial forces of the regional police and TNI commands in Papua.

"The regional police and TNI commands in Papua are working in synergy to prevent communal unrest," he said after meeting with the House of Representatives Security Commission I here on Tuesday.

He said the incidents in Papua were handled by the regional police backed up by the regional TNI command.

Asked about possible deployment of the army`s special Kopassus unit to Papua he said that no Kopassus forces had so far been sent there.

Asked if there had been a request from the police for the deployment of Kopassus, Agus said there was none.

"The incidents in Papua are still in the category public security threat so they are handled by territorial forces," he said.

Admiral Agus on the occasion also said that participants of the 3rd Papua People`s Congress who had been arrested were still being interrogated by police.

"Let us just wait for the results," he said.

He said whatever the TNI forces did in the field was based on regulations and procedures. If a TNI member violates them he will certainly be processed, he said.

"I can guarantee that no TNI member was involved in the incidents," he said.

The incidents in Papua recently included a raid on the Third Papua People`s Congress that led to clashes, the shooting of mine workers in the Freeport mining area and the shooting of a local police chief. ***3***
