The meeting with Suu Kyi happens in accordance with Minister Marty`s official visit to Myanmar that start in October 28 and will end by October 30. The minister`s presence in Myanmar is meant to observe the country`s readiness to be Chair of ASEAN by 2014.
On Saturday (Oct 29), Minister Marty will meet with Myanmar`s President U Thein Sein, the Foreign Affairs Minister U Wunna Maung Lwin and other ministers.
Earlier in October 28, Minister Marty met with the Chairman of National Human Rights Council U Min Wra, Chairman of Presidential Advisors Ko Ko Hlaing and members of local NGOs, business association, the media and human rights activists.
The October 28`s meeting discussed about progress of democratization in Myanmar and overview from the national figures about Myanmar government`s request to accelerate their turn to be Chairman of ASEAN from the original shift in 2016 to be in 2014.
Indonesian Foreign Ministry spokesman Michael Tene said after visiting Myanmar, Minister Marty would report his findings to representatives of other ASEAN members. The decision of whether or not Myanmar could be approved as Chair of ASEAN in 2014 would be made together with members of the regional organization.
Asked about the democracy issue in Myanmar, Michael said Indonesia had noticed some progress was made by Myanmar recently. "But at the same time, we have to keep supporting Myanmar in implementing more democracy values in the country," he said.
