"We will always anticipate the impact of the disputes there," Indonesia`s National Defense Forces (TNI) Chief Admiral Agus Suhartono told ANTARA News.Nusa Dua, Bali (ANTARA News) - Indonesia`s National Defense Forces (TNI) will closely monitor and remain watchful about the impact of disputes in the South China Sea, its chief, Admiral Agus Suhartono, said.
"We will always anticipate the impact of the disputes there," Agus told ANTARA News here on Tuesday.
Tensions over security in the region following the emergence of China as regional power and the riots happening even in developed countries would indirectly affect the security situation in the ASEAN region, he said.
He said ASEAN members that share maritime borders must always be alert and anticipate the possible effects of unstable security conditions in the area.
At the 19th ASEAN Summit, ASEAN senior officials have been focusing on plans for the implementation of the Declaration of Conduct in the South China Sea in connection with cooperation projects proposed by parties involved in the dispute.
For the first time ASEAN has also set up a working group to discuss elements that would be included in the code of conduct.
China, Taiwan, four ASEAN member countries namely Vietnam, the Philippines, Malaysia and Brunei Darussalam are involved in overlapping claims to parts of the South China Sea.(*)
