Chicago (ANTARA News/AFP) - A former leader of Mexico`s powerful Ciudad Juarez cartel was sentenced to 18.5 years in a US prison on drug trafficking charges, prosecutors said Thursday.

Juan Jose Quintero Payan, 69, pleaded guilty to helping smuggle multi-ton loads of cocaine and marijuana from Columbia and Peru into the United States between 1978 and 2002.

He was arrested in Mexico in 2002 and extradited to the United States last year.

"Today`s sentencing reinforces DEA`s commitment to continue our relentless fight against drug traffickers everywhere," Javier Pena, special agent in charge of the Drug Enforcement Administration`s Texas branch. (*)
