Kampar, Riau (ANTARA News) - Floods hit four villages in Gunung Sahilan sub district, Kampr District, Riau Province, submerging 189 houses, 625 hectares of oilpalm plantations and 154 hectares of rubber plantations.

The four flood-affected villages were Gunung Sahilan, Sahilan Darussalam, Subarak, Sungai Lipai and Kebun Durian, Head of Gunung Sahilan Sub District Dasman said here on Monday.

"Since Saturday morning (Dec 17), the water has risen and inundated people resettlement area reaching at a height of up to 30 cm," he said.

Incessant heavy rains have triggered the floods inundating hundreds of houses.

"At Gunung Sahilan village, 86 houses are inundated, at Sahilan Darussalam 103 houses, Subarak seven houses, Sungai Lipai nine houses, and at Kebun Durian 21 houses. Of the four villages, Gunung Sahilan and Sahilan Darussalam are the worst affected," Dasman said.

Some 624 people have been evacuated to safer places by the local authorities.

Roads connecting the four villages with Pekanbaru, the capital of Riau Province, have also flooded since Sunday.

Around 1,000 people would be affected because they earn their living from oilpalm plantations which are currently flooded.

The local authorities have provided emergency aid especially medicines for the flood victims.
