Jakarta (ANTARA News) - President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono led a cabinet meeting on Tuesday afternoon to discuss a wide range of issues, including security precautions for Christmas and New Year celebrations.

"As Christians will celebrate Christmas and the Indonesian nation New Year soon, as usual, the state, security agencies in particular, need to provide security assistance to ensure that the Christmas (and New Year) celebrations will proceed in a peaceful, orderly and smooth manner," the President said.

The President asked National Police Chief Gen. Timur Prodopo and a number of relevant ministers to report on their security preparations for the Christmas and New Year celebrations.

The meeting also discussed the prospects of the global economy in the upcoming years as part of efforts to enable the country to adapt to the problems that could arise by issuing proper government policies.

"This is important to ensure that what we are doing will match the plans, ranging from the government`s work plan, state budget to other supporting plans. We must adapt to global economic developments," he said.

The meeting which opened at 02.00 p.m. also discussed a draft government regulation on agrarian reform and efforts to conduct effective bilateral relations with other countries.

Also present at the meeting were Vice President Boediono and all cabinet ministers.
