Kampar, Riau (ANTARA News) - The flood that swept through Kampar Kiri subdistrict in Riau province over the past few days spread to 11 villages before dawn on Tuesday.

The flood cut off land communication from and to Kampar Kiri Hulu subdistrict as 1.5-meter high flood waters had submerged the connecting roads.

"The water level began to increase at 03.00 a.m. and four more villages, namely Lipat Kain, Sungai Geringging, Sungai Paku and Lipat Kain Utara were flooded," Kampar Kiri subdistrict head Febrinaldi told Antara by phone.

Only seven villages, namely Domo, Teluk Paman, Teluk Paman Timur, Padang Sawah, Sungai Liti, Kuntu and Lipat Kain Selatan were flooded on Monday, he said.

He said the flood also inundated oil palm and rubber plantations and houses and cut off land communication from and to eight villages.

Kampar Kiri Hulu subdistrict also could not be reached by land from Lipat Kain. The only public transport means available there was boat, he said.

"I have informed the Kampar district administration (of the latest conditions in the subdistrict). The district administration is prepared to distribute aid to affected people and is now coordinating with the state logistics board as the local residents are in dire need of food stuffs," he said.

Head of the Kampar District Natural Disaster Mitigation Body (BPBD) Fauzi Nurta said "Tomorrow the Kampar district administration will distribute aid among flood victims and the Kampar district head himself will distribute the aid in the field," he said.
