"We are to wait for the results of a survey and the decision of our leader, Megawati Soekarnoputri, so we are waiting for the right moment," PDIP Secretary General Tjahjo Koemolo said.
Jakarta (ANTARA News) - The Indonesian Democracy Party-Struggle (PDIP) has not yet named its candidate for the presidential election in 2014 pending the results of a survey and a directive from party leader Megawati Soekarnoputri, a top party executive said.

"We are to wait for the results of a survey and the decision of our leader, Megawati Soekarnoputri, so we are waiting for the right moment," PDIP Secretary General Tjahjo Koemolo said here Wednesday.

About the possibility of PDIP coalescing with another party for the presidential race, he said PDIP had an open mind about it.

"It is quite possible that we will coalesce with another party, Golkar for instance, just like we did with Gerindra in the 2009 election. Or we might also enter the race alone," he said.

However, whether or not PDIP would seek an alliance with another party would depend on the results of the legislative election that would precede the presidential race.

The outcome of the legislative election would by and large determine whether or not PDIP would take part in the presidential election in alliance with another party, Tjahjo said.

"If in the legislative election we do not win enough votes, we automatically have to coalesce to run for president," he added.

Earlier, a senior Golkar Party member, Hadjriyanto Y Thohari, had said his party was prepared to ally itself with PDIP in the presidential election in 2014.

"A coalition between Golkar and PDIP in the 2014 presidential race is something very possible. Both are parties with extensive political experience," he said.

The two parties also had almost identical political platforms "so why not, Golkar will not object to a coalition with PDIP," Hadjriyanto said.(*)
