Musi Rawas, S Sumatra (ANTARA News) - The number of traffic deaths in Musi Rawas regency, South Sumatra, in 2011 reached 174, an increase of 20 pct compared to 116 in 2010," head of Musi Rawas traffic police Adjunct Police Commissioner Syafrudin said Wednesday.

Most of the traffic accidents, he said took place at the Sumatra trans highway.

Besides the 174 deaths, hundreds of road users had sustained serious and light injuries and a total material loss of Rp800 million.

The high rate of deaths, he said, was not only because of the traffic density in the area, but also because of the lack of the realization of the people in traffic discipline, like the use of helmets for motorcyclists and safety seat belts in cars.

In this context he called on road users in Musi Rawas to avoid driving while drunk, reckless driving and using complete equipment and papers. (*)
