Ramadi, Iraq (ANTARA News/AFP) - Gunmen murdered the mayor of a town in the western Iraqi province of Anbar as he was leaving the mosque on Wednesday evening, officials said.

Saeed Hamdan Ghazal, who had just completed evening prayers in the town of Heet, was shot dead by attackers on a motorcycle who managed to flee the scene, two police officials said.

Ghazal was killed instantly, according to a police spokesman and Iyada al-Nimrawi, the town`s deputy police chief.

Wednesday`s violence comes around three weeks after US troops completed their withdrawal from Iraq, leaving security in the country solely in the hands of domestic forces. (*)
