Jakarta (ANTARA News) - President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono called on the police to accept all the criticisms so far as inputs for internal introspection.

"I have followed the dynamism ad developments at public levels about the police`s performance recently. I read media reports there was an increase of criticisms towards the police over several cases. Accept them as a reality," he said at the police leadership meeting here on Tuesday.

He said the first thing the police had to do to deal with the criticisms was conduct internal improvements. "Introspect to see if there are wrong things and correct them," he said.

He said "if the criticisms were not true or exaggerated and did not reflect the truth conduct clarification."

He said reform in the police force must be continued so that the institution would be better.

"Reform must continue including with regard to police integrity as it relates to trust. As the head of state and government I have also recorded some shortcomings. Make improvements on them and in the next three years the tasks will be heavier," he said.

National police chief General Timur Pradopo at the meeting reported about the need to increase the number of police personnel and also equipment.

In their strategic plan for 2012 to 2014 the police would increase the number of their personnel and equipment to match with the needs.

"A total of 10,300 more police personnel would be needed in 2012, 20,350 in 2013 and 20,350 in 2014. So the total number of new personnel until 2014 would reach 51,050 to make the police force to reach 419,015 by 2014 to make the ratio of police and people at 1:570," he said.

In response to the request President Yudhoyono said the government would meet them according to budget availability.
