Santo Domingo (ANTARA News/Xinhua-OANA) - At least 26 people were killed and 57 injured in a road accident in the outskirts of Haiti `s capital Port-au-Prince, Traffic Services said on Tuesday.

The accident happened Monday night when a dump truck`s brakes failed and pile-up crashed against several vehicles and houses.

National Director of Traffic Services Will Dimanche said victims include several women.

Dimanche said "Between 26 and 30 people have been killed and 57 injured. We are looking for the driver," adding "witnesses say the driver jumped from the truck after hitting the first vehicle."

"It seems like the driver lost control of the truck and killed many stallholders who sell food in the sidewalks and many pedestrians, before stopping aside Haiti`s National Television," said Dimanche.

Witnesses also said the truck crashed against several houses and dragged down several people and other vehicles which were along the way before it stopped beside the building of Haiti`s National Television.

The truck transported building material while running on a highway that links Port-au-Prince with Delmas.

The injured people were taken to local hospitals including La Paix hospital and Haiti`s State University hospital.

Authorities said about 10 vehicles, including some taxis, were completely destroyed.

Prime Minister Gary Conille told a local radio station that the tragedy exceeded Haitian state`s capacity to manage the emergency situation.

President Michel Martelly went to the scene together with his wife. He issued a statement calling "for the solidarity of the medical personnel to help the victims."
