Jakarta (ANTARA News) - The Australian Embassy in Jakarta on Thursday launched its official Facebook page to coincide with Australia Day. The page is the first of its kind for Australian diplomatic missions worldwide.

Australian Ambassador to Indonesia Greg Moriarty said in an embassy press statement the Facebook page would help increase awareness about Australia with the Indonesian public.

"Through the Embassy`s Facebook page, we plan to share interesting news and views about Australian life and culture with the Indonesian public," he said.

The page is particularly important given the popularity of Facebook in Indonesia, according to the ambassador.

"Indonesia has the world`s second-largest facebook user base and we want to engage with the public in a way that complements our traditional cooperation with the media."

"There are tens of thousands of Indonesians who have a connection to Australia, whether through study or friends and family who have visited the country."

The launch of the page includes an inaugural competition allowing participants to win two return tickets from Jakarta to Sydney and Brisbane by describing what they most like about Australia.

"We hope that the many friends of Australia in Indonesia will click "suka" on our Facebook page," he said.(*)
