On Saturday, February 11, violence erupted within the Salampessy clan at Pelauw village, leaving six people dead, hundreds of houses set on fire, and forcing thousands of people to seek shelter in neighboring villages.
"I deeply regret the customary clash that should not have happened since it was caused by a trivial matter that could be solved peacefully among the community," Governor Ralahalu said.
The governor then encouraged the warring community to exercise self restraint and avoid another clash that would only leave long lasting suffering.
The violence flared when members of the Salampessy clan met to decide on the inauguration date of their traditional house, but failed to reach agreement when each insisted on their own date.
Governor Ralahalu also offered his condolences to the families that suffered fatalities and expressed hope that they would not be provoked to engage in another clash.
