Garut, W Java (ANTARA News) - Hundreds of homes in two areas of Haurpanggung village in Tarogong Kidul subdistrict, Garut district, West Java Privince. were inundated on Tuesday night following the overflowing of the Cimanuk river.

"The flood was caused by the overflowing of the Cimanuk river after heavy rain," said Tarogong Kidul subdistrict chief Aji Sukarmaji.

The deluge which started at around 20.00 local time invaded Kampung Cimacan and Kampung Sukarya which together were inhabited by 280 families.

The flood waters reached a height of 50 cm and the affected people immediately acted to save their furniture and other valuable possessions by moving them to higher ground.

"Until now residents are still busy saving their belongings by moving them to elevated spaces," Aji said.

At 22.00 local time, the flood had not yet receded while local authorities came to the two affected kampongs to survey the situation.

A number of police and military personnel had arrived to give a helping hand to the flood victims.
