Jakarta (ANTARA News) - Minister of Women`s Empowerment and Child Protection Linda Amalia Sari Gumelar is attending the 56th session of the UN Commission on the Status of Women in New York, the United States.

The session raised the issue related to rural women`s role in eradicating poverty and famine, Linda said in a press statement on Wednesday.

At the meeting, the minister spoke of the efforts to empower rural women and progress in the implementation of the Beijing Platform for Action (BPfA) in Indonesia.

Linda who is at the head of the Indonesian delegation to the meeting held from February 27 to March 9 also touched on the progress achieved by the Indonesian nation in accelerating the empowerment of women in national development.

The session brings together 45 member countries, and a number of international non-government organizations and observers.

The Indonesian delegation consists of representatives from the Coordinating Ministry for People`s Welfare, the Foreign Ministry, the Ministry of Women`s Empowerment and Child Protection, the Indonesian Women`s Congress (KOWANI), and the House of Representatives (DPR).

The session attached significance to the role played by rural women in eradicating poverty and famine, challenges faced by rural women and their contributions to the economic development.

It also stressed that to achieve gender equality was not merely the responsibility of women themselves or certain groups but also served as common responsibility among the public, government, public institutes and organizations as well as private companies.
