Ternate, North Maluku (ANTARA News) - Supported by natural condition, many areas in Ternate, North Maluku Province, are potential for seaweed cultivation, local government official Thamrin Marsaoly said here on Sunday.

"Ternate city government will support the farmers who would like to develop seaweed cultivation here because we have many potential areas for that commodity," Thamrin said.

He noted that the farmers in Moti village had developed the commodity that was ready to be harvested in the next two months.

Ternate has now had a seaweed processing plant, and therefore Thamrin encouraged the farmers in Taduma and other areas to develop the seaweed cultivation activities.

Meanwhile, fisheries observer from Khairun University in Ternate, Tamrin Ali Ibrahim said that besides Ternate, Halmahera Selatan district, Sula District, and Morotai district in North Maluku were the centers of seaweed development.

Therefore Ibrahim noted that the seaweed processing plant should also be built in those three districts, particularly in Halmahera Selatan district.

He said that if the local government failed to build a seaweed processing plant in those three districts, the farmers would sell their commodity to North Sulawesi Province.
