Morotai Island which named as a 'Pearl in The Edge of Pacific' will exploit the event of 2012 Sail Morotai as a momentum to actualize the spirit of Pacific gateway. Therefore, 2012 Sail Morotai currently bring the theme "Step to the New Era of Pacific Regional Economy", with image logo of sailboat and labelled 2012 Sail Morotai with its mascot of fairy bird that is rare species and protected in North Maluku Province.
The Minister of Marine Affairs and Fisheries, Sharif C. Sutardjo explained that the theme means the economy today and in the future starts to move from Atlantic to Pacific region. Therefore, through the implementation of 2012 Sail Morotai, Morotai District is more prepared to embrace new century, the century of Pacific economy. Furthermore, Morotai Island has geo-politic and geo-economy potentials which can be developed to become building catalisator, particularly to the region of North Maluku Province as a gateway to the Pacific center competition.
Therefore, Sharif expressed his expectation that an international-scale event will not only success in its implementation, but also success in result. Meanwhile, Morotai also has maritime region and small islands which potentially can be developed as a maritime industrial area and integrated fisheries as well as marine tourism and history region. He also said, Morotai Island has a diverse stock of various fish resources, according to a study of the existing marine potential, there are 160 economically valuable fish species and 31 species of commercial fish, with fisheries potential is estimated at 148,473.8 ton / year with cultivation potential that can be used for 81660.6 tons / year. As for the aquaculture sector, coastal and marine area Morotai Islands has calm quality of waters and it is possible to aquaculture development, such as grouper, lobster, sea weed, and pearl. Therefore, the vast sea and extraordinary natural resources, it expects to be managed and optimized to boast the region economy, particularly to improve the people welfare. "The determination of Morotai as the Mega Minapolitan since 2009 is a form of ministry commitment towards the development of Morotai Island as an economic gateway in Pacific Region. The implementation of Sail Morotai is one of efforts to accelerate the realization of this great idea," Sharif stated.
In addition to the rich of potential marine, North Maluku is famous for its world history tourist destination, because its history as the World War II area. The island has a strategic position in Asia Pacific, while the geocentric position of Morotai Island is Mainland Asia, Southeast Asia, Japan, Pacific region, and Australia. The event of 2012 Sail Morotai aims to put Morotai in the world tourism destination as a historical tourism location. To initiate this on June to September 2012 there will be held a big event, 2012 Sail Morotai so this event is a platform to remind the memory of World War II.
Meanwhile, as as an annual event which organized by the Indonesian Government, 2012 Sail Morotai have several noble goals, basically the objectives to be achieved is accelerate the development of Morotai Islands district which certainly expected to affect the improving the welfare of society. When it has implemented in past several years, Sail activities is expected to give benefits to local communities, such as construction and repairment of road infrastructure, development of tourist sites, and various activities that is implemented by the Ministry / Center Institution of Local Government. This program will be held in Ternate and Morotai, North Maluku Province from June to September 2012.
2012 Sail Morotai activities is a continuation of the activities of Sail Indonesia which had implemented in several years earlier. The name of Sail Indonesia started to be transformed since year 2009, following the implementation of World Ocean Conference (WOC) in Manado, North Sulawesi. Those activities were began packed in accordance with the trademark of each organizer area, starting from Sail Bunaken in 2009, which was centered in Manado and Bitung, North Sulawesi, Sail Banda in 2010 in Ambon Maluku, and Sail Wakatobi-Belitung in 2011 in Wakatobi Southeast Sulawesi and Belitung Bangka Belitung Islands. For 2012 Sail Morotai that is legitimized the publication of Kepres No. 4 of 2012 on the National Organizing Committee of 2012 Sail Morotai. The event of Sail Morotai this time is more diverse than the previous sail activities, including Bhakti Kesra Nusantara, Bhakti Pelangi Nusantara Operation (TNI-Air Force), Bhakti Kartika Jaya Operation (TNI-Army), BUMN Care with Morotai, Research Ship Scientific Opration and Outer Island.
Meanwhile, other activities including sailboat rally, national and international seminar, nautical sports, nautical teenagers and young adults across the archipelago, cultural festivals and tourist attractions, and Small Business products Medium Enterprises (SMEs) of Marine and Fisheries exhibition. Specifically to social activities and low market, Sharif expects to be able to help ease the burden on the community to meet the needs of daily life, especially if the new policy on the raise of material price for Oil Fuel (BBM) which will be implemented in April 2012.
In addition, other interesting activities including yacht rally which targetted to be participated by 120 participants from several countries. This will open new route from Davao, Philippines and Kinabalu, Malaysia, These yachter will be around to 21 districts in Indonesia starting from Kupang / Saumlaki / Dagho Tahuna / Tarakan and go out in Belitung and Batam or other places which are being set. Meanwhile, the top event will be held in Port Daruba Morotai on 14 September 2012 which will be attended by the President of Republic of Indonesia.

The Background of Sail Event in Morotai
Morotai Island (695 square mil/ 1,800 square kilometres) is an island name and new definitive district located in Halmahera Islands, Maluku Islands, Indonesia as a part of North Maluku Province, which is one of islands in Northern Indonesia. The District of Morotai Islands was inaugurated by Minister of Home Affairs of Indonesia, Mardiyanto on October 29, 2008 as a result of expanding from North Halmahera District. Geographically, Morotai Island is located between 200 to 240 North Latitude and 12815 to 12848 East Longitude. Morotai Island is bordered with Pacific Ocean in the north, Halmahera Sea in the east, the Strait of Morotai in the South and Celebes Sea in the west. Morotai Island is an area of 2474.94 square kilometers or 10 percent of the land area of North Maluku Regency. Development Stages for Mega Minapolitan Development in Morotai
(1) In 2009, KKP initiated the concept of development of Mega Minapolitan concept in morotai Island with historical consideration of the potential of marine and security defense resources.
(2) In 2010, KKP facilitated the preparation of Regional Management Plan for Coastal and Small Islands (RPW3K) in Morotai including Strategic Plan and Zoning Plan.
(3). For the Coastal Zoning Plan and Small Islands (RZWP3K), KKP recommended 9 (nine) locations of center points of economy growth based on marine and fisheries resources ranging from upstream to downstream as well as its network both domestic and internationaly.
(4) In 2011, the KKP has facilitated the preparation of the Detailed Zoning Plan (RZR), one of the priorities for the development of fisheries industrialization in the area of Bere-bere Technopark industry in level of adequated licensing activities. For RZR, KKP recommended zones for investment activities of fishing ports, industrial processing, office and warehouse, marine tourism, residential, and conservation and supporting services. This plan has been prepared for immediately assigned to the Regent Regulation.
(5) In 2012, KKP lking for financial support to facilitate the process of legalization for RZ and RZR referred as a requirement to implement the development in Morotai.
(6) In 2013, in addition to KKP which will encourage the fisheries/ cultivation/ processing/ marketing programs / activities, it will continue to prepare detailed zoning plan on the economic center of this area which it has not ready to arrange, as in central area of in Tiley and Daruba and surrounding areas, as well as in the Marine Park Dehegila.
