Depok, West Java (ANTARA News) - The Sabang Merauke Circle (SMC), PT Freeprort Indonesia, and the University of Indonesia`s Faculty of Political and Social Sciences (Fisip UI) opened the Papua Center on Monday.

"Papua Center will serve as an academic and cultural bridge for the progress of the people of Papua," the center Executive Director from Fisip UI, Prof Bambang Shergi Laksmono, said here on Monday.

He added that the Papua Center was set up at Juwono Sudarsono Auditorium of Fisip UI in the presence of PT Freeport Indonesia President Director Rozik B Soetjipto, University of Indonesia (UI) Rector Prof Gumilar Rosliwa Somantri, Cenderawasih University (Uncen) acting Rector Festus Simbiak, MPd, and Sabang Merauke Circle board of directors chairman Syahganda Nainggolan.

Bambang said the establishment of the Papua Center was inseparable for good cooperation between the University of Indonesian and Cenderawasih University.

According to Bambang, the UI Papua Students Association was also set up in conjunction with the establishment of the Papua Center.

"We hope the students from Papua will make UI their home to attract as many students from the province as possible to study at the University of Indonesia," Bambang said.
