Medan, N Sumatra (ANTARA News) - A series of aftershocks continued after a massive earthquake with a magnitude of 8.5 on the Richter scale struck Sinabang waters in Aceh province on Wednesday.

By Wednesday evening, the Office of the Meteorology, Geophysics and Climatology Agency (BMKG) in Medan, North Sumatra, recorded five aftershocks of lower magnitude.

"The first aftershock measured 7 on the Richter scale. The magnitude continued to fall to 6.7 on the Richter scale," the office`s spokesman, Hendra Suwarta said.

There was no immediate report of the extent of damage caused by the massive quake, he said.

Hendra said the office had repeatedly contacted the geophysics station in Simeulue but received no response.

A massive quake with a magnitude of 8.5 on the Richter scale rocked Simeulue at 03.38 p.m. on Wednesday.

The quake was centered 93.12 degrees eastern longitude and 2.4 degrees northern latitude at a depth of 10 km.(*)
