"Indonesia supports the Mexico initiative to use a trade calculation based on added values, but the G20 members must be aware that the creation of employment in developing countries are inseparable part of the agricultural sector," Trade Minister Gita Wirjawan said here on Monday.
Gita said that various developing countries still faced such challenges in creating and maintaining employment in the agricultural sector.
The challenges included the lack of financial facilities for the agriculture sector and infrastructure barriers from the production center to the supply network.
The other challenge is the competition in the domestic market in the face of imported agricultural products from advanced states.
Besides, the tariff challenge for agricultural products which was still relatively high.
Indonesia hoped that G20 which grouped relatively large scale businesses and had the capacity to influence world trade and economy, would want to understand the aspirations of developing countries.
"G20 agreement could not directly be implemented by developing countries, particularly if G20 does not understand the reality of challenges still facing developing countries all the time," the trade minister said.
He said Indonesia also had the interest to raise the aspirations of developing countries to boost trade and growth of the real sector.
Therefore, it was necessary to measure trade based added values not based on gross trade flows now being generally applied.
"Developing countries are badly in need of the creation of a balanced and fair multilateral trade system which could answer demand for development," the minister said.(*)
