Bandung, W Java (ANTARA News) - Indonesia is still mulling over the UN offer to join an advance team of observers in Syria, particularly with regard to a guarantee from the conflicting parties in the country to accept the team, a senior government official said.

"Basically, Indonesia needs to consider three principles before sending its representatives to join the team," said AM Fachir, director general of public information and diplomacy at the Foreign Affairs Ministry, at a press conference.

He had called the press conference on Wednesday to mark the 57th anniversary of Asia-Africa Conference at the Merdeka Building in Bandung, West Java.

"The three principles are: first, acceptance of the advance team by conflicting parties in Syria; second, security guarantee for the advance team; and third, preparedness of all parties to keep peace," AM Fachir stated.

The principles will be laid down in operational guide or standing procedures for the team to be assigned to Syria, he said.

"These all are still being discussed, particularly with regard to the security guarantee," AM Fachir added.

He said the Indonesian government saw the UN offer as an honour.

"Indonesia is prepared to help UN on the condition that ceasefire has been put into force in Syria and the Syrian government has endorsed the presence of the advance team," AM Fachir explained.

An advance team of six UN observers, led by Col Ahmed Himmiche of Morocco, has been in the Syrian capital of Damascus since April 16, 2012.(*)
