Jakarta (ANTARA News) - Vice President Boediono noted that the late admiral (retired) Sudomo contributed to the progress in building the Indonesian Navy and never hesitated in taking a central position in carrying out his military tasks.

"His life was never apart from the history of the Navy," Boediono said in his remarks, while leading the military funeral for Sudomo at Kalibata Hero`s Cemetery, southern Jakarta, Thursday.

Further, Sudomo had been known for his firm and straightforward leadership, the vice president said.

The former Coordinating Minister for Political, Law and Security affairs, Admiral (ret) Sudomo passed away at age 86 here on Wednesday.

He had a major role in several military operations, including the Mandala operation (1961-1962) to free the West Irian (Papua).

Sudomo was born in Malang, East Java, on September 20, 1926. He was Navy Chief from 1969 to 1973 and also Chief of Security and Order Operation Command from 1978 until 1983.

Among dignitaries present at the funeral were former president BJ Habibie and former vice president Try Sutrisno.(*)
