Padang, West Sumatra (ANTARA News) - Counterfeit money in West Sumatra in the fourth quarter of this year has reached 142 pieces, an increase from those in the previous quarter.

Reports from the regional economic study team of Bank Indonesia in the province received in Padang Tuesday show that the increase is the result of the rising need for year-end cash transactions coupled with the discovery of counterfeit money.

In the meantime, the counterfeit money found in the previous quarter reached 83 pieces, consisting of Rp100 thousand and Rp50 thousand changes issued in the 1993-2005 period.

The counterfeit money at Bank Indonesia was found by the general public by way of changing money at counters or from bank deposits through manual money counting and paper money sorting.

Bank Indonesia also continues familiarizing the general public and banking circles of the signs of original money to reduce the circulation of counterfeit money.
