Jayapura, Papua (ANTARA News) - Police in Papua are chasing the gunman that had shot a Spanish national while taking a walk with his wife on Base G beach on Tuesday.

Papua regional police chief Inspector General BL Tobing he had ordered his men to chase the gunman that had hit Dietmar Pieper (55) a Spanish not German national as reported earlier.

He issued the order after visiting the victim who was injured in his leg and chest and now being treated at the emergency room at Dok II regional hospital in Jayapura.

Regional police command spokesman Adjunct Senior Commissioner Yohannes Nugroho told ANTARA "police personnel have been deployed to find the suspect believed to be still around Jayapura town."

The victim`s wife, Eva Medina, on his bed side told the regional police chief at the hospital they were just taking a walk to enjoy the beach when suddenly someone dropped out of a car and then shot him.

"I heard three shots," his wife said.
