...did not have the potential to cause a tsunami...Bandarlampung (ANTARA News) - An earthquake measuring 5.6 on the Richter scale shook the southeast area of Simeulue district, Aceh province, at 12.14 a.m local time on Friday, an official said.
According to Chrismanto, the head of Lampung`s Geophysics office, the epicenter of the earthquake was located at the coordinate 1.17 degrees northern latitude and 92.29 degrees eastern longitude at a depth of 10 km.
The qake location is about 452 km southwest of Simeulue, 548 km southwest of Aceh district, 560 km northwest of West Nias, North Sumatra, 1,805 km northwest of Jakarta.
The Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency said the earth quake had no tsunami potentials.
Last week, a 5.3 magnitude earthquake struck off the northwest coast of Simeulue district, according to the Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Board (BMKG).
The epicenter of the quake which occurred at 05.58 p.m. was located 617 km northwest of Simeulue at a depth of 10 km, head of the Lampung provincial geophysics station Chrismanto said.
The quake did not have the potential to cause a tsunami, he said.
Earlier in the same week, another earthquake measuring 5.0 on the Richter scale also shook Pidie district in Aceh province on Sunday (June 10, 2012) at 10.12 p.m.
The quake was centered 23 km southeast of Pidie at a depth of 13 km, according to the agency.
There was no immediate report of casualties or material damage.
Aceh bore the brunt of a 8.9-magnitude undersea earthquake and subsequent tsunami in December 2004, leaving around 200 thousand people dead.
