Indonesia had invited an Algerian representative to the Asia-Africa Conference, even though Algeria was still under French colonial rule.
Jakarta (ANTARA News) - Algeria will never forget the support it received from Indonesia during its struggle for independence, according to Algerian Ambassador to Indonesia Abdelkrim Belarbi.

"Indonesia had invited an Algerian representative to the Asia-Africa Conference, even though Algeria was still under French colonial rule," he said here on Tuesday.

Algeria`s participation in the conference boosted its people`s spirit because of the international recognition their struggle received, Belarbi added.

"Indonesia has also sent its soldiers to Algeria to help us in our independence struggle. We will always respect Indonesia`s first president Soekarno who supported our fight for freedom 50 years ago," he stated.

After 50 years of independence, Algeria has maintained its relations with partner countries like Indonesia, Belarbi said.

Algeria achieved its independence from France on July 5, 1962, after more than a century of violent colonisation, during which 1.5 million people, or half of the country`s population, died.

Algeria is the second largest country in Africa and 10th largest in the world. It is a major gas producing country and its non-oil/non-gas exports include phosphate, iron ore, zinc, salt, marble, agricultural and industrial equipment, and agricultural products.
