"We can learn from them."Surabaya (ANTARA News) - The Asia-Pacific intergovernmental meeting held by the Citynet organization, Surabaya, East Java province, is focusing on transportation issues.
The Citynet-organized meeting held on 9 to 12 July 2012 is reviewing the agreements negotiated sometime in the past including the issues on clean water and waste processing, Surabaya Mayor Tri Rismaharini said here Monday.
"However the current meeting focus on transportation issues," the mayor added.
According to Risma the secretariat of Citynet which is previously located in Yokohama, Japan will be removed to Seoul, South Korea.
"In Seoul, the transportation system is better hence the discussion on transportation will be focused," she noted.
The mayor explained that the advantage of the world-wide intercity meeting is studying and sharing information and knowledge on urban problems and their solutions. Among others are toilet cleaning management and, urban city development like the one in the Philippines.
"We can learn from them, just how we can improve the way suitable with the environment," Risma said.
Meanwhile the program director of Citynet Bernadia Irawati Tjandradewi said Citynet" is a local government network in Asia-Pacific region established in 1987.
Up to now the Citynet members are more than 126 coming from 20 different countries and consisting of six association in six countries.
"During 25 years there are so many things that have been done, such as waste disposal management in several cities and environmental education in some elementary schools in Cambodia and Vietnam," Bernadia said.
An issue discussed on the meeting is urban development which ignores the environmental impacts.
"In urban areas the development is increased but uncontrolled, although the planning is good but not well implemented. This is the issue that will be discussed, how the cities can adapt to the climate change," Bernadia said.
