Pambudy made this appeal during a meeting with the European Union (EU) Ambassador to Vietnam, Julien Guerrier, and Belgian Ambassador to Vietnam, Karl Van den Bossche, in Hanoi, Vietnam.
"It is time for ASEAN to have a sustainable and data-based fisheries management system, as what has been implemented by the EU. If we succeed at the bilateral level, we can replicate it at the ASEAN level for our collective welfare," he remarked here on Wednesday.
During the meeting, he also discussed the initiative of triangular cooperation between Indonesia, Vietnam, and the EU in sustainable fisheries management and eradicating illegal fishing practices.
This initiative was presented by Julien Guerrier and Karl Van den Bossche to Pambudy.
The triangular collaboration is based on comparative advantages. In this case, Indonesia has significant potential that has yet to be optimally utilized, while Vietnam faces challenges related to overfishing.
Meanwhile, the EU, as a partner in technology and governance, is seen as a credible mediator.
"This is a collaboration that benefits all parties," Pambudy stated.
Furthermore, this cooperation is considered strategic due to the mutually beneficial conditions for Indonesia and Vietnam.
Indonesia has a vast maritime area and significant fishery resource potential, but faces challenges with its fishing fleet and limited processing industry capacity.
Meanwhile, Vietnam has an advanced fishing industry but struggles with maritime territory limitations and overfishing.
"We cannot work alone. Therefore, we welcome the involvement of the EU, as a neutral and experienced partner, in monitoring system and traceability for the sustainable fisheries development in ASEAN," Minister Pambudy stated.
Moreover, Pambudy encouraged the ASEAN to adopt a quota and size regulation system for caught fish, similar to those implemented under the EU's Common Fisheries Policy.
