"Fisheries cooperation, especially in the development of lobster, tuna, and seaweed cultivation, is included in the cooperation areas to be strengthened," Maritime Affairs and Fisheries Minister Sakti Wahyu Trenggono informed in a statement released here on Tuesday.
He said that the cooperation strengthening coincides with the 70th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the two countries.
The strengthening of aquaculture cooperation was marked by the signing of an implementing arrangement (IA) document by the Indonesian Maritime Affairs and Fisheries Ministry and the Vietnamese Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development.
President Prabowo Subianto and the General Secretary of the Communist Party of Vietnam, To Lam, witnessed the signing of the document at the State Palace in Jakarta on Monday.
"With the cooperation strengthening, we will be closer to the shared goal of making Indonesia and Vietnam champions in fishery production in the region," Trenggono said.
The two nations have agreed to exchange information related to aquaculture regulations and data; enhance cooperation in cultivation technology, trade, and marketing of fishery products; as well as encourage investment and partnerships among stakeholders in the sector.
The cooperation also encompasses aspects of education and training, including the exchange of government officials and scientists to develop human resource capacity in aquaculture.
As an implementation mechanism, Indonesia and Vietnam will establish a joint cooperation working group that will meet regularly—at least once a year—to review the progress of cooperation and formulate strategic steps for the future.
The agreement will be valid for five years from the date of signing and can be extended through a mutual written agreement.
