Jakarta (ANTARA News) - Central Jakarta police are chasing suspects in connection with an alleged rape attempt at a public transport serving Senen-Ciledug route at midnight on Monday.

The chief of the Central Jakarta Metropolitan Resort Police, Senior Commissioner Angesta Romano Yoyol said here on Tuesday the police would cooperate with the transportation service with regard to knowing the suspects.

"We will coordinate with the transportation service to assure if the car was really serving the route and if the driver was the rightful person," he said.

He said the transportation service actually had already taken efforts to assure public transport security such as by requiring drivers to wear a uniform and banning window coating but another rape incident in a public transport had almost happened again.

He said the police had interrogated the driver of the public transport who said that he had never planned the crime.

"He said suddenly a passenger entered his car and was immediately attacked," he said.

Yoyol said the police did not believe him as there were already four passengers in the car before the victim entered.

He said the driver known as Ari Angga was later found to be one of the five suspects in the robbery and rape attempt at the Mikrolet C01 public transport and an illegal driver.

Yoyol said the victim was still shocked and so the police could not as yet draw much information from her.

The victim known by her initial as Is (31 was on the way home after working when the incident happened.

Yoyol said according to the victim when she was already in the car suddenly the light in the car was switched off and the suspects immediately attacked the victim and tried to rape her.

An army soldier, second sergeant Nicholas Sandi happened to pass the scene when he suddenly heard a shout from the car and immediately ran after the car.

Because of the chase the victim was later thrown out of the car on Jalan Merdeak Utara, Gambir, in Central Jakarta, he said.
