"Home-bound travelers who intend to ride on motorbikes are advised to take other means of public transport such as trains, buses, airplanes, or free trips offered by a number of private companies," Fauzi Bowo said.Jakarta (ANTARA News) - Jakarta Governor Fauzi Bowo has called on the local residents not to ride motorbikes to their home villages during 2012 Id-Ul Fitr (Lebaran) holiday mass exodus.
"Home-bound travelers who intend to ride on motorbikes are advised to take other means of public transport such as trains, buses, airplanes, or free trips offered by a number of private companies," Fauzi said at Jakarta City Hall on Thursday.
The governor noted that together with Jakarta Metropolitan Police, they continued to give insight to the local community about the risk of riding motorcycles during Lebaran holiday rush.
Fauzi said the Jakarta provincial government encouraged the residents to avoid riding their motorbikes to their home villages because it would provide them with other mode of transportation.
"Lebaran holiday travelers this year from Jakarta will be provided with 8,294 intercity and inter-province buses, 59 sets of train, 24 ships, and 466 airplanes," Fauzi said.
Besides, he added that Indonesian Navy would provide two warships, each with the capacity of transporting 1,000 motorcycles and 1,500 passengers.
Fauzi said the two navy ships would leave Jakarta`s Tanjung Priok port for Tanjung Emas port in Semarang, Central Java, respectively on August 16 and 18, 2012.
Meanwhile, Jakarta Transportation Office spokesman Udar Pristono said motorcycles were not designed for long distance trip and thus he also called on the people not to ride on motorbikes during Lebaran exodus.
"The Lebaran holiday travelers this year are not recommended to ride on motorbikes because it is risky," Udar said, adding that Metro Jaya police would conduct a check point at Bekasi and Tangerang for home-bound travelers on motorbikes.(*)
