The police has also recorded 3,567 traffic violations.
Medan (ANTARA News) - At least 14 persons, homebound for the Lebaran festival, have been killed in 64 traffic accidents that have taken place in Medan in north Sumatra in the last four days, a police report said on Wednesday.

"We have recorded deaths of 14 homebound holiday travelers killed in traffic accidents, during highway monitoring carried out under the Ketupat Toba Operation 2012," head of public relations and information of north Sumatra police, Adjunct Senior Commissioner MP Nainggolan said.

He added that in addition to 14 fatalities, 111 injured victims of traffic accidents have been admitted to hospitals in north Sumatra.

"Of the 111 victims, 52 have sustained serious injuries and are still undergoing intensive treatment at the hospital, while the rest have been discharged," Nainggolan noted.

He also pointed out that material losses related to traffic accidents in the province, in past four days are being estimated at more than Rp188 million.

Nainggolan added that the police has also recorded 3,567 traffic violations, given traffic tickets to 2,799 violators and warned several drivers to be more careful.

North Sumatra police spokesman Senior Commissioner Heru Prakoso had said earlier that 3,388 police personnel have been deployed under the Ketupat Toba Operation to ensure security.

Besides, 1,268 deputies have been assigned to provide operational assistance, including 440 deputies of the Pamong Praja police unit, 220 scouts, 550 deputies from transportation services, and 58 deputies from healthcare services.
