Jakarta (ANTARA News) - Former Indonesian military chief Gen. (ret) Endriartono Sutarto said on Wednesday the Military Dialog Center (MDC) had asked him to help handle the decades-old armed conflict in Myanmar.

"MDC has extended a special invitation (to me) to assist the Myanmarese government in resolving the armed conflict," he said.

Endriartono said he had tried to identify the causes of the armed conflict and found that 11 different ethic groups were opposed to the Myanmarese government.

He said MDC had asked him to help resolve the armed conflict in Myanmar because of his experience in handling an armed conflict in Indonesia`s western-most province of Aceh a few years ago.

In addition, Endriartono said he had also tried to find a solution to the armed conflict in Myanmar through a ceasefire.

"There has been a ceasefire there. But violations of the ceasefire are still reported," he said.

Though most of the ethnic groups had accepted the ceasefire the armed conflict had shown no sign of abating, he said.

He said he had met with opposition groups when he visited Myanmar. There would be a dialog between the opposition groups and military officers in Myanmar, he added.

The Indonesian military troops` experience and capability in resolving an armed conflict peacefully had inspired the Myanmarese government to invite him to help settle the armed conflict, he said.

He added military operations must prioritize human rights and consider people`s feeling. (S012)
