Jakarta (ANTARA News) - PT Kawasaki Motor Indonesia (KMI) said it would invest Rp600 billion to expand the production capacity of its factory in Cibitung, Bekasi, West Java.

The capacity expansion is needed to meet growing demand for the Japanese brand motorcycle in the country, company`s president Yoshihiro Tanigawa said here on Monday.

The production capacity of the factory would be increased to 140,000 a year from 100,000 units at present, Tanigawa said in a statement.

Indonesia could become the production base for Kawasaki motorcycle in this region, he said, adding Thailand might produce only certain types of motorcycle.

"The factory produces motorcycles not only for domestic market but also for exports," he said.

Company`s marketing manager Freddyanto Basuki said orders had been received for 2,500 units of the new product, Kawasaki Ninja 250 ABS, which was launched on Saturday.

He said it takes two months before delivery after indents are received for the new products.

He said Kawasaki Ninja 250 ABS uses the technology of anti lock braking system making it safer and more convenient.

It is sold at a price of Rp57 million, he said.
