Garbage is not a major cause of flood.
Jakarta (ANTARA News) - Indonesia`s Environmental Affairs Minister, Balthasar Kambuaya, said that floods and landslides in several provinces in Indonesia, were caused by spatial mismanagement and bad planning.

"Undisciplined behavior regarding spatial management has resulted in floods and landslides," said the minister, on Monday.

He said that good spatial management is crucial for every region; therefore, it is important to make an environmental impact assessment before carrying out a project.

The ministry often holds dialog sessions with various institutions prior to the rainy season, in anticipation of natural disasters such as floods and landslides.

Garbage is not a major cause of floods, but land conversion and spatial mismanagement are, he stated.

Several regions such as Bengkulu, South Sumatra, Pandeglang, Sukabumi, Jakarta, and Bandung are experiencing floods, as Indonesia enters the rainy season.

Landslides have been reported in Sungapan, Sadu, Soreang sub district, Bandung district, Kelapa Nunggal, Sukabumi district and West Java province on Sunday, following incessant heavy rains.

In Banten province, flood waters have reached 1.5 m, submerging at least 200 houses in Kumbang Kampil village of Pandeglang district. One house has been swept away by flood currents and 400 ha of rice fields have been inundated.
