Tomohon, North Sulawesi (ANTARA News) - Mount Lokon in North Sulawesi Province erupted here on Monday at around 12:09 A.M., central Indonesian time (WITA).

The eruption occurred following the escalation of volcanic activity on the mountain since last Sunday (Dec 16).

"The ash from the eruption reaches 3,000 meters [into the sky above the] Tompaluan crater. Local people are being asked to take precautions," Chief of the Lokon and Mahawu volcano-monitoring station Farid Ruskanda Bima said here on Monday.

Mount Lokon has shown an increase in activity since early December. The Lokon and Mahawu monitoring station had recorded eruptions on December 3, December 5 and December 8. These eruptions had sent volcanic dust up to 3,500 metres into the sky.
