"There are a number of local leaders who have proven their ability."
Jakarta (ANTARA News) - Local leaders must be promoted to national level in an effort to overcome the crisis of national leadership figures, a political observer has said.

"Apart from the leadership problem, there are a number of local leaders who have proven their ability to successfully manage the problems of people`s life in their respective regions," Arbi Sanit, a political observer from the University of Indonesia (UI), said here on Wednesday.

Arbi Sanit said that the crisis in the regeneration and rotation of national leadership was an indication of failure in the democratization of the political party system and the general elections system in the current reform era.

"This fact has lasted for a long time because people became complacent with the success of advanced nations in institutionalizing political parties and national elections as a means of rotating and regenerating national leaders. This facts also cause negligence and ignorance of other ways and source of innovation which could preserve the quality of democracy," the political observer said.

He said that the innovation in promoting local leaders to the national level would help maintain the quality of democracy. This could be done by promoting local leaders as a political and government leader where in the end he or she would be nominated as a president.
