The so-called "seven dangerous days" road safety campaign over the New Year festivity began on December 27 and will end Wednesday. During the period, road accidents will be specifically monitored.
Anusorn Kaewkangwan, deputy director general of the Disaster Prevention and Mitigation Department, said on Wednesday morning that major causes of road accidents were drunk driving (46.90 percent), not wearing a safety helmet (24.96 percent), and fast driving (20.45 percent).
Central province of Nakhon Pathom had the highest number of deaths with 16, followed by northern province of Chiang Mai (14) and Bangkok (13).
Western province of Trat is the only province that had no reports of road accidents or casualties, he added.
On January 1 alone, 72 people were killed and 583 injured in 533 road accidents.
