Jakarta (ANTARA News) - West Jakarta Metropolitan Resort police are still investigating the case of baby trafficking uncovered recently for possible other suspects involved in it.

"We are still investigating the case to find possible other suspects involved in the case," the Jakarta police`s chief of crime investigation, Adjunct Senior Commissioner Hengki Haryadi, said here on Wednesday.

The police have so far arrested seven suspects involved in the trafficking carried out by a syndicate since 1992 in Pesing Koneng, Kedoya Utara, in the sub-district of Kebon Jeruk, West Jakarta.

The suspects are known by their initials as LD alias T (48), A (52), HS alias L (62), R (51), M (57), E (40) and LS (35).

Hengki said the police would also investigate possible connection between the syndicate and the baby for sale online advertisement that had once appeared in the "tokobagus.com" recently.

He meanwhile said that according to the suspects transactions had been carried out using cash money.

He said the suspects took the babies from poor families and paid the families Rp1.5 million each in addition to Rp1.6 million in delivery payment and later sold them at between Rp10 million and Rp15 million each to second persons.

These persons then sold them to the mastermind known as LD at between Rp15 million and Rp25 million, who later sold them to a Singaporean citizen at between Rp25 million and Rp70 million for each female baby and Rp80 million for the male baby.

West Jakarta Metropolitan police uncovered the practice on January 2, 2013.

If convicted the suspects could face up to 15 years in jail and a fine of Rp60 million. (*)
