Jakarta (ANTARA News) - Maritime and Fisheries Minister Sharif Cicip Sutardjo said banking sector is expected to support the program of revitalizing fish breeding farms in the country.

Support from banks would be badly needed to revitalize shrimp breeding ponds such as in northern coast of Java, Shariff said here on Monday.

He said the ministry has launched a revitalization program with low interest credit called People`s Business Credit (KUR) for groups of fish breeding farmers with a ceilings ranging from Rp20 million to Rp400 million .

The working capital credits will be used to rehabilitate fish ponds in cooperation between farmers and investors, he said.

He pointed to the success recorded by farmers in a number of areas lately in minimizing the spread of disease resulting in an increase in productivity.

He said the ministry would continue to encourage expansion of bank credits for the fishery sector, adding the ministry will help farmers to get access to bank credits.

The program will help farmers to meet the credit requirements set by banks, he said.
