Banda Aceh, Aceh (ANTARA News) - The Customs and Excise Office officials have foiled an attempt to smuggle in five tons of sugar.

"The sugar was to be smuggled out of the Free Trade and Port Zone of Pulau Weh and was transported in a truck," customs official Beni Noveri said here on Friday.

He said that the attempt to smuggle the sugar was foiled by customs officials in cooperation with police officers of Banda Aceh regional police.

Noveri said the sugar which was to be smuggled in from Sabang was imported from India and Thailand. The commodity can only be sold in the free trade and port zone.

With the confiscation of the five tons of sugar, the customs and excise office of Banda Aceh has held in custody a total of 20 tons of sugar.

"The 20 tons of sugar were confiscated after several attempts to smuggle them were foiled in the past several months," he said.(*)
