Jayapura, West Papua (ANTARA News) - West Papua Governor Abraham O Ataruri denied reports that 94 people in Kwoor, Tambrauw Distrik, had died of kwarshiokor.

"The information was wrong because I led a meeting on Monday and received a report that only four had died because of their illnesses," he said to newsmen here on Wednesday after attending a coordination meeting of resort police chiefs from across Papua and West Papua here.

He said according to reports from the chief of the West Papua health service only four people had died and their case had been handled.

A disaster-alert team and physicians had been sent to the location in the hilly region, he added.

The governor hoped the case would not be blown up as it had been overcome the local health service and government.

He said access to the area which is located deep in the jungle was difficult.

Several print media in Jayapura Tuesday reported that 94 residents of Kwor had died because of kwarshiokor and other diseases.(*)
