"This is a good sign that TNI especially the army has begun to be open and honest about members who are not disciplined for whatever reasons," Arie Sujito from state Gajahmada University said.
Sleman, Yogyakarta (ANTARA News) - A sociologist said the army`s decision to unveil the perpetrators of the recent penitentiary raid that led to the death of four detainees could be an indicator that the TNI (military) had started to be more open.

"This is a good sign that TNI especially the army has begun to be open and honest about members who are not disciplined for whatever reasons," Arie Sujito from state Gajahmada University said here on Thursday.

An army`s investigation team revealed here on Thursday that 11 members of the army`s special forces Kopassus were involved in the raid in a penitentiary in Cebongan, Sleman, Yogyakarta, on March 23 and killed four detainees who were suspects involved in the killing of a Kopassus member on March 19.

Arie said the army`s decision to unveil the case was worth appreciation for the improvement of law enforcement efforts in the country.

"It is hoped TNI would really unveil the case honestly and thoroughly with respect to justice," he added.

He said he hoped the move would also become the momentum for TNI to discipline their apparatus in the field of law enforcement.

"This may be used as the starting point to improve TNI members`s discipline and respect to the law," he said.

Arie hoped that investigation of the case would be really transparent disclosing the motives of their action.

"This is also a heavy task for the National Commission on Human Rights (Komnas HAM) to follow it up," he said.

The disclosure of the perpetrators of the raid gave the army chief of staff, General Pramono Edhie Wibowo, a higher mark.

"This will give a positive mark to Pramono Edhie Wibowo as the chief of the army," he said. (*)
