Jakarta (ANTARA News) - Former chief of police detective retired Comr. Gen. Susno Duadji has been put in jail for corruption and abuse of power after being in hiding for several days.

"It is true, Susno is now in the Cibinong prison, arriving there on Thursday night at 23.00 local time," Akbar Hadi, the spokesman of the Directorate General of Correctional Institution, said here on Friday.

Susno, who was sentenced to 3.5 years` imprisonment for by a Jakarta District Court, has been declared a fugitive by the Attorney General Office after refusing execution.

Susno had appealed the verdict to the higher court and the Supreme Court but both appeals were rejected.

The higher courts, however, did not immediately ordered for him to be sent to jail.

The Attorney General Office and West Java Prosecution Office failed to arrest Susno in his house in Bandung, West Java, after the regional police interfered.

After the incident last week, Susno was in hiding and the Attorney General Office declared him a law fugitive.

Police had been involved in locating Susno`s hiding place, but the seriousness of police in bringing Susno to jail had been doubted.

Deputy Chairman of the Indonesian Corruption Watch Emerson Yuntho said it was hard to believe that police found it so difficult to locate Susno.

Emerson said there were suspicions that Susno was being protected by certain force, who feared that Susno might talk and unveil big cases involving people in high places in the force.

Police Spokesman Brig. Gen. Boy Rafli Amar said police were serious in seeking where Susno was hiding and helping the attorney general in his execution.

The Attorney General Office, however, had said it would not back down from its attempt to catch Susno.(*)
