Jakarta (ANTARA News) - President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono has congratulated the Indonesian Army contingent on winning the Australian Army Skills at Arms Meeting (AASAM) shooting competition by grabbing 17 gold medals.

"After successfully grabbing a gold medal at the International Physical Olympiad, Indonesia has once again shown its achievement to military members from 17 Asia-Pacific and European countries," the President said on his twitter account on Saturday.

"The Indonesian Army contingent has brilliantly won the AASAM shooting competition in Australia by grabbing 17 gold medals. Congratulation. I am proud of (the achievement)," he said.

The President said the nation was proud of the Indonesian soldiers who had often won international shooting competitions using weapons produced by state-owned weapons and ammunition manufacturer PT Pindad.

He further asked the Indonesian contingent to continue to have training and make good preparations for any competition. "To be a champion you must make good preparations through hard training. There is no soft way."

AASAM is a combat focused skill at arms competition that encompasses current in-service small arms systems, competed at individual and unit levels.

The competition is designed to allow for the assessment of current in-service small arms system capabilities, equipment and targetry, and training analysis of combat shooting techniques, weapon training doctrine, and small arms practices.
