The government will decide it through a meeting in the evening today."
Jakarta (ANTARA News) - The Indonesian Council of Ulemas (MUI) had called on the country`s Muslims to not quarrel just because of their differences in starting the fasting month of Ramadhan.

"It is very likely that Ramadhan would be started differently with Muhammadiyah to start it on Tuesday while the government still has yet to determine it on Monday evening but will likely to decide it will start on Wednesday," MUI`s associate chairman Ma`ruf Amin said in a press conference here on Monday.

He said the difference occurs because of different methods used to determine the date, adding Muhammadiyah uses "hisab" calculations) while Nahdlatul Ulama uses "rukyat" (moon sighting).

"The government will decide it through a meeting in the evening today," he said.

Ma`ruf said people must develop tolerance and would not be trapped into their differences and a quarrel.

He said Muslims must promote brotherhood and would see the differences as a blessing.

"People also must not become spendthrifts that would only bring disadvantages," he said.

He said MUI would also monitor TV and radio programs adding MUI hopes TV and radio stations would not broadcast forecasting programs or exaggerated comedies or shows with artists wearing indecent costumes.
