So far, there in no report about the casualties and material damage."Jakarta (ANTARA News) - An earthquake measuring 5.5 on the Richter scale jolted West Sumatra province at 12.43 pm on Wednesday, according to Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG).
"BMKG reported that the epicenter of the earthquake was located some 74 km northwest of Sungai Penuh in Jambi at a depth of 24 km below sea level," said Sutopo Purwo Nugroho, spokesperson for the National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB).
He added that the earthquake, which was felt strongly by the people in Pesisir Selatan, did not have the potential to trigger a tsunami.
"So far, there in no report about the casualties and material damage," Nugroho said.
Indonesia is prone to seismic upheaval due to its location on the so-called Pacific "Ring of Fire", an arc of volcanoes and fault lines encircling the Pacific Basin.
Last Saturday, a magnitude 5.0 earthquake also jolted southwestern Kaur District in Bengkulu Province, but it did not have the potential to trigger a tsunami.
