"Next year, we want to build a shelter for the children. This plan will be proposed in the 2014 Jakarta`s Revenue and Expenditure Budget," said Vice Governor of Jakarta Tjahaja Basuki Purnama, known as Ahok, speaking at City Hall, Central Jakarta, on Tuesday.
According to the plan, the shelter would be divided for two types of children, those who have become victims of violence and a second shelter for children who live on the streets of Jakarta.
Besides, we also plan to establish a number of social institutions to accommodate those who are no longer able to meet their daily needs," said Basuki.
He noted that the construction of the safe house and the shelter are one of the city government priority programs for next year.
"We want to achieve prosperity for the whole community, not only for the children. Therefore we have instructed district, village heads and the Dept. of Education to collect data," said Basuki.
He added that data collection would be done to simplify the city government's providing assistance or guarantees to children in need.
"Especially for the educational program, we do not want any children in Jakarta to drop out of school or have no schooling at all. Therefore, data collection should be done first," said Basuki.
He added that one of the obstacles faced by the city government in implementing the children protection and welfare program are the children who do not want to be moved into shelters.
"Because there are some people who have nurture these street children, the children now hesitate and are unwilling to be placed in shelters. These issues must be dealt with," said Basuki.(*)
